Dogsperity: The Science of Canine Achievement

A personal message from Dogsperity author Ryan O’Meara

“Actions speak louder than words, and a smile says, “I like you. You make me happy. I am glad to see you.” This is why dogs are man’s best friend. They are SO glad to see us that they almost jump out of their skin. So, when they are glad to see us, we are glad to see them. Don’t you think it works in a human to human encounter? It does.” – Dale Carnegie.

As one of the sixteen million people around the world to have a genuinely life changing experience on the back of reading Dale Carnegie’s classic self-help bible, How to Win Friends and Influence People, one passage in particular resonated with me so loudly I must have quoted it to just about everybody I know.

Why?

Well, not just because it’s one hundred percent true. Not just because it is one of those little nuggets of wisdom that can have a tangibly positive impact on one’s personal outlook. No. The reason I relay this particular passage from the world’s most famous personal improvement book is because it bears out a belief I’ve had throughout my entire life…dogs are gifted, at birth, with a dose of what I can only describe as pure magic. They do something to people that no other animal on the planet has ever been able to replicate in such consistently large numbers.

The passage I refer to is this:

“Why read this book to find out how to win friends? Why not study
the technique of the greatest winner of friends the world has ever
known?
Who is he?

You may meet him tomorrow coming down the street.
When you get within ten feet of him, he will begin to wag his
tail.

If you stop and pat him, he will almost jump out of his skin to
show you how much he likes you.

And you know that behind this

show of affection on his part, there are no ulterior motives:
he doesn’t want to sell you any real estate, and he doesn’t want to
marry you.

Did you ever stop to think that a dog is the only animal that doesn’t
have to work for a living?

A hen has to lay eggs, a cow has to give
milk, and a canary has to sing. But a dog makes his living by giving
you nothing but love.”

He was right you know.

The man who, quite literally, wrote the book on how to win friends, influence people and get ahead in life cited, as his best example, an animal who embodies the lessons Carnegie was teaching.

For those who doubt the impact and influence of our friend the dog – and there are those who do – I ask this:

Why the dog? Of the millions of species of animals to inhabit this planet we share, how is it that one, and only one, inherited the title ‘Man’s best friend’?

Dogsperity not only sets out to provide an answer to the question ‘why the dog?’, it looks at the science and psychology behind the perpetual success of the animal that now shares millions of human homes around the world and how we can all take valuable lessons in life from man’s greatest animal ally.
